Tidal Dwarf

چکیده

We review the observational evidences for tidal dwarf galaxies, a class of small galaxies formed out of the tidal debris of collisions between massive galaxies. Tidal dwarfs are found far from the interacting parent galaxies, associated to massive clouds of atomic hydrogen located at the tip of long tidal tails. These newly formed galaxies are among the best cases for the study of galaxy formation in the nearby Universe.

The Formation of Dwarf Galaxies in Tidal Debris: A Study of the Compact Group Environment

From R-band images of 42 Hickson compact groups, we present a sample of 47 candidate dwarf galaxies that are associated with the tidal tails and arms in the groups. The candidates, found in 15 tidal features, have R magnitudes and masses (for M=L = 1) intively. Their masses and locations are compared to the predictions of theoretical/N-body tidal dwarf formation scenarios. Considering the longe...

Identifying old Tidal Dwarf Galaxies in Simulations and in the Nearby Universe

Most Tidal Dwarf Galaxies (TDGs) so-far discussed in the literature may be considered as young ones or even newborns, as they are still physically linked to their parent galaxies by an umbilical cord: the tidal tail at the tip of which they are usually observed. Old Tidal Dwarf Galaxies, completely detached from their progenitors, are still to be found. Using N–body numerical simulations, we ha...

Interstellar Medium Oxygen Abundances of Dwarf Irregular Galaxies in Centaurus A and Nearby Groups⋆

We present results of optical spectroscopy of 35 H II regions from eight dwarf galaxies in the Centaurus A group. [O III] λ4363 is detected in ESO272−G025 and ESO324−G024, and direct oxygen abundances of 12+log(O/H) = 7.76 ± 0.09 and 7.94±0.11 are derived, respectively. For the remaining galaxies, abundances are derived using common bright-line methods. To compare the influence of group environ...

Dwarf-spheroidal satellites: are they of tidal origin?

The Milky Way and Andromeda must have formed through an initial epoch of substructure merging. As a result of fundamental physical conservation laws tidal-dwarf galaxies (TDGs) have likely been produced. Here we show that such TDGs appear, after a Hubble-time of dynamical evolution in the host dark-matter halo, as objects that resemble known dSph satellite galaxies. We discuss the possibility t...

A new method of estimating the mass-to-light ratio of the Ursa Minor dwarf spheroidal galaxy

Dwarf satellite galaxies undergo strong tidal forces produced by the main galaxy potential. These forces disturb the satellite, producing asymmetries in its stellar distribution, tidal tail formation, and modifications of the velocity dispersions profiles. Most of these features are observed in the Ursa Minor (UMi) dwarf spheroidal galaxy, which is one of the closest satellites of the Milky Way...
